HELP! I Can’t Cope And I Feel Overwhelmed.
My friend Jack is a very loving husband and father. Some say he’s the perfect dad and life partner and is always loving and caring. But lately, his mood has turned quite dark as he carries his work stress home with him.
For the last year at work, Jack has been stressed continuously by issues he cannot control, e.g., a client’s changing demands, his manager’s decision-making skills, or even when his colleague is a little late with a report. When this happens, the stress of handling things outside his control makes Jack go from calm and rational to being completely overwhelmed and unable to cope.
Jack’s reaction to stress is quite normal, as all of us experience stress every day. Stress is our body’s signal that we are facing a perceived dangerous or threatening situation. Stress warns us to either stay and “fight” or to run away from the situation and take ‘flight.”
This is the classic fight or flight syndrome we all face anytime we face a perceived dangerous or threatening situation. The situation may not actually be dangerous or life-threatening, but as long as we perceive it as dangerous or life-threatening, it becomes real for us!
Here’s some familiar of symptoms of stress many of us experience:
Emotional symptoms of stress include:
· Becoming easily agitated, frustrated, and moody
· Feeling overwhelmed, like you are losing control or need to take control
· Feeling bad about yourself (low self-esteem)
Physical symptoms of stress include:
· Low energy
· Headaches and frequent colds and infections
Cognitive symptoms of stress include:
· Forgetfulness and disorganization
· Inability to focus and constant worrying
· Being pessimistic or seeing only the negative side
Behavioral symptoms of stress include:
· Appetite changes — either eating too little or too much
· Increased use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes
Being occasionally stressed is fine, but when we experience long-term stress, it can and will affect our mental and physical well-being.
And this is where hypnotherapy comes in to help us control our reaction to our automatic fight or flight needs that produce too much stress.
In hypnotherapy, we bring you back to the root cause of why, how, when, and where you learnt this behaviour to not cope, to feel so overwhelmed and completely stressed out.
When the client sees where the pattern comes from, I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques to relax the person, increase confidence, and install coping skills. Focusing on these techniques and skills makes the person feel more empowered and finally in control.
With the use of a 21-day audio, we reprogram the brain and shift the overwhelm, from helplessness to confidence, control, and inner calm.
